DIY EXPERIENCE

What is Duff’s Cakemix?

Duff’s Cakemix is a do-it-yourself cake and cupcake decorating studio founded by Food Network star, Duff Goldman! We provide everything you need to bring your cake vision to life. Whether you follow one of our step-by-step guides or do your own thing, you get to focus on the most fun and creative part of cake-making – the decorating!

How long does the experience take?

The experience typically takes about an hour, a bit more or less depending on the kit type, and we plan our seating accordingly. Planning a celebration? See studio location pages for more details.

Do I have to book in advance?

To secure your preferred date and time, we suggest booking in advance. It’s never too early! We also accept walk-ins on a first come, first served basis.

What is your cancellation policy?

We do not charge a cancellation fee for standard reservations. However, as a courtesy to other guests who might otherwise be turned away, we kindly request as much notice as possible.

Do I need to choose my kit items ahead of time?

Nope, all you need to do is show up ready for some decorating fun! You will be able to pick from our assortment of fondant, buttercream and goodies upon arrival. It’s always helpful to do a little time brainstorming in advance if you have the time. Check us out on Instagram for some inspiration — @DuffsCakemix!

Is there a minimum age for the activity?

From little ones attending “mommy/daddy & me” sessions to adults hosting holiday parties, competing in team building or sipping wine at one of our offsites, cake decorating is an amazing creative outlet for any age!

Is this a guided class experience?

Our standard experience is DIY (do-it-yourself), but we’ll give you the download on how everything works upon arrival. We have step-by-step guides of our most popular designs, and members of Team Duff are always eager to share tips and tricks and answer questions. Even if you don’t fancy yourself an artist, it’s easier than you think to make cool looking cakes and cupcakes. We’ve seen over 100,000 people do it!  We also intermittently host cake decorating classes and workshops in studio and offsite (announced via social media and our e-newsletter). If you are interested in having a dedicated instructor for your group, please consider our “workshop” option, included in THE “CELEBRATION” package or offered as an a la carte item. Please email or call us.

Will Duff be there when I visit?

Unfortunately, Duff doesn’t have set times when he is in the studios, but he loves to stop by between filming, airplanes, and plying his own cake decorating craft with his friends at Charm City Cakes, so you never know when he might show up and give you some pointers, and be sure to tag him @duffgoldman and @duffscakemix with your awesome creation and he just might holla back!

Is there a limit on the numbers of decorators?

We accept online reservations for up to thirty guests. For group sizes 31+, please email or call us.

What if I just want to come and watch, and do not plan to participate?

We are all about spending quality time with friends and family while decorating cakes. Please keep in mind that we may not be able to guarantee seats for guests not participating during our busier hours.

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS

Do you have private rooms?

We do not have private rooms, but we do offer a private buyout option. See studio location page for more details about THE “TAKEOVER”.

How long is the event?

We typically schedule up to two hours in our studio for parties to allow for all the usual fun party festivities – food, gifts, mingling, etc. We welcome the event host to arrive up to 15 minutes prior to set up any food or decorations.

What is included in the event?

You can choose to either build-your-own party with THE “CLASSIC” and a la carte options, or opt into THE “CELEBRATION” package which includes a celebration cake to cut and serve to guests, colorful balloons, an apron for the guest of honor and guided instruction from one of our expert decorators. See studio location page for more details on our offerings.

What is your cancellation policy?

We do not charge a cancellation fee for our parties and events. However, as a courtesy to other guests who might otherwise be turned away, we kindly request as much notice as possible.

Can I bring alcohol?

You are welcome to bring alcohol for private events. Please see studio location page for more details about THE “TAKEOVER” option and THE “REBEL”.

Can I bring outside food?

Outside food and drink is welcome, with the exception of anything already sold in our studio. Alcohol is only permitted if you are hosting a private buyout. See studio location page for more details about THE “TAKEOVER” option.

Can I bring in my own decorations?

Our studio is always festive with inspiration cakes! We also offer a cluster of colorful balloons and an orange table cloth for your side table (included in THE “CELEBRATION” package or as an a la carte option). You are welcome to bring extra balloons and decorations, but please keep in mind that your party space is limited and that you will be sharing the studio with other reservations and parties. We also ask that you keep decorating table décor minimal and avoid adding any confetti or small, ingestible décor on the decorating tables.

What happens if my guest count changes?

We can only guarantee tables, chairs and product for the number of decorators indicated in the booking. Please keep in mind that we may not be able to guarantee seats for guests not participating during our busier hours. If you wish to increase or decrease the number of decorators in your event, we kindly request that you do so via email as far in advance as possible, and ideally 5 days prior to your event date.

How do I book my event?

You can submit a “Request an Event” form on your preferred studio’s location page or just give us a call or shoot us an email.

What is the minimum number of guests for a private event?

We do not require a minimum number of guests to participate in a private event. However, we do require a minimum spend of $500 during weekdays, $1,500 on Saturdays, and $1,000 on Sundays. This includes up to two hours of studio time. See studio location page for more details about THE “TAKEOVER” option and our other event offerings.

Can I bring outside entertainment?

Due to limited space and in consideration of other guests, we can only accommodate outside entertainment (face painters, magicians, princesses, etc.) with private events. See studio location page for more details about THE “TAKEOVER” option and our other event offerings.

What if I have more than one child celebrating a birthday?

Bring it on! Please let us know in advance and we’ll make sure both guests feel honored on their big day!

Can I bring ice cream to serve to my guests with the celebration cake?

We offer a curated selection of packaged food and drinks and welcome outside food (except cakes/cupcakes). We do not provide any storage (refrigeration or freezing) or additional services regarding outside food.

Can I pay my full or remaining balance before the event?

We can only accept payment on the day of your event. We can split your final bill into a maximum of two forms of payment (Visa, Amex, MasterCard, or Discover). Please note, we are cashless and do not accept checks.

PRODUCT

What is fondant?

Fondant, aka “sweet dough” or “rolled icing”, is a thick sugary, pliable dough. We cover all of our cakes in fondant which creates a smooth, beautiful surface for decorating. We also provide you with additional servings as part of your kit. It can easily be sculpted to create anything from the family dog to a unicorn horn to a beautiful flower. We offer a full assortment of colors, and of course you can always create your own by combining two or more of ours.

Kosher

Unfortunately, we are not currently certified Kosher.

Allergies

None of our cakes/cupcakes contain nuts as an ingredient. However, we do bake our items at an offsite production center that bakes other products that do contain nuts. For this reason, we cannot guarantee that their environment is completely nut free or free of cross-contamination. If you or one of your guests is highly allergic we recommend not eating our product. Please contact us for more information.

Vegan / gluten free

We are excited to announce that we are now offering gluten-free, vegan, and soy-free products in partnership with Erin McKenna’s Bakery! Please refer to their website for information on the products and FAQs at: https://www.erinmckennasbakery.com. Because the majority of our products use conventional ingredients, we cannot fully eliminate the risk of cross contact contamination. We seat guests at communal tables and there will be other guests around with gluten, dairy, and soy products, so for those with severe allergies we recommend reserving a to-go kit. We encourage you to order to-go kits in advance, to be picked up at the time of opening to provide us with sufficient prep time. For those with severe allergies we will be providing a naked cake and will add 4 additional items between vegan frosting, fondant packets and goodies. For more information regarding this option, feel free to contact us.

Flavors

  • Confetti: vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles baked in; cake are layered with vanilla buttercream.
  • Chocolate: chocolate cakes are layered with chocolate buttercream.

Can I order a custom cake / cupcakes?

We do not offer custom cakes or cupcakes through Duff’s Cakemix. We are all about facilitating your creative expression! It’s easier than you think, we’ve seen over 100,000 people do it! We’ll give you the download on how everything works upon arrival. We have step-by-step guides of our most popular designs, and members of Team Duff are always eager to share tips and tricks and answer questions. We also intermittently host cake decorating classes and workshops in studio and offsite (announced via social media and our e-newsletter). Need something a tad more upscale?
